Tips For Sensitive Skin Care – What To Look For, What To Avoid

Do you need sensitive skin care? Do you suffer from stinging, burning or redness after using facial or body creams, or have dry or irritated patches? Sounds like your current products are not doing the job and may, in fact, be doing you harm.

What to avoid

There are a few main ingredients in skin care creams and lotions that could be irritating your complexion.

Fragrances: Fragrances top of the list of ingredients that cause problems with many people’s complexions. They are used to mask any unpleasant smell from substances used in the product, since many of the chemicals that go into most over-the-counter creams don’t smell very nice.

Fortunately, it’s quite possible to get sensitive skin products that don’t contain any fragrances. The manufacturers use only natural, neutral-smelling ingredients that don’t produce any odors that need to be masked. A high quality sensitive skin care product will have no discernible smell when you open the container.

So for a delicate complexion, look for fragrance-free products as your first step towards reducing your uncomfortable reaction.

Parabens: Parabens should also be avoided by those with irritated or red patches. These are chemical preservatives, widely used in the cosmetics industry. They are cheap so you’ll find them in almost every product you rub on your face or body.

But parabens can cause irritation, dermatitis and Rosacea in people who are susceptible to these conditions. Parabens are also suspected in the formation of cancers, particularly breast cancer.

You’ll often see parabens listed as methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl paraben. Once again, it’s possible to buy products that don’t contain parabens at all so you should look for these if you suffer from certain disorders.

Mineral oil: Finally, try to avoid products that contain mineral oil. You’ll often see it listed as liquid paraffin, paraffin wax or petrolatum. It’s a petroleum-based product used to retain moisture. However, it actually strips away protective oils, causing dryness and red patches.

What to look for

There are a few ingredients you can actively target when searching for sensitive skin care creams.

Phytessence wakame: This is an antioxidant derived from Japanese sea algae. It helps to soothe inflammation through its B-group vitamins.

Babassu: This is derived from a palm tree and has been used as a facial treatment for centuries. It soothes dryness and inflammation and is particularly recommended for eczema and itchy, dry skin.

Active manuka honey: This special honey has unique healing and antioxidant properties. It’s recommended for blemishes, including acne, and serious conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
